Match Report
The third games of the season saw Toby Reserves take on Hullbridge Sports A in the league. After disappoint in the cup last week the team were aiming to continue where they left off in the league with another promising performance. The first 10 minutes were slightly nervy with the team finding it hard to get the ball out of feet which in turn invited pressure. From the start it was clear that Hullbridge’s game plan appeared to be to often try and play the ball over the top. After about 10 mins a misjudged interception allowed Hullbridge to take the ball down and slot it past Toby Reserves to make it 1-0.
The goal seemed to spring the team into life and although it was a very scrappy game Toby looked more dangerous on the attack. However around the 35 minute mark another ball over the top saw the keeper and striker go for the ball shoulder to shoulder. The ref judged this to be a foul in the box and a penalty was awarded, possibly a harsh decision but there nothing the team could do. Hullbridge stepped up and made it 2-0 with a well taken penalty.
Toby Reserves battled on determined not to give up on the game and their pressure right at the end of the half paid off. As the ball went up to Chris Rowland he showed great strength to bully their Centre back, headed it over him and ran onto his own through ball, before lifting the ball over the keeper to score. 2-1 at half-time and a crucial time to score for Toby Reserves.
The second half saw the team really rally together determined to get something out of the game and the start to the second half was much more encouraging. The back 3 put on a strong and hard workIng performance, heading away and dealing with multiple balls over the top and also cutting out any danger.
The improved second half team performance was rewarded when a free kick into the area saw Chris Rowland able to get on the end of it and bundle the ball into the into the net. 2-2 and a well deserved comeback.
Both teams searched for the third with Toby Reserves looking the more dangerous going forward however in the end neither team could quite strike the killer blow and it ended honours even. Toby Reserves may be slightly disappointed not to get the 3 points but will be encouraged and proud of the fight back. Another point on the board and the team move on to the next game.
